Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with his visiting counterpart of Estonia Juri Ratas, who arrived here last weekend for a visit.

During their meeting, Trudeau and Ratas discussed issues of mutual interest, including the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and regional security challenges. They promised to work more closely together to create jobs in both countries and build economies that work for everyone.

As part of the celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of Estonia's independence, Ratas has met members of the Estonian-Canadian community in Toronto during his visit.

Trudeau said Canada and Estonia enjoy a strong relationship, rooted in decades of cooperation and strong people-to-people bonds. The bilateral relationship is enriched by the vibrant Estonian-Canadian community - the largest Estonian community outside Estonia. I look forward to find ways to broaden our cooperation, and create more opportunities for Canadians and Estonians alike." he added.

Today's meeting is the first formal meeting between the prime ministers.

The bilateral trade volume between Canada and Estonia totaled nearly 110 million Canadian dollars (some 80 million U.S. dollars) in 2017. Canadian exports to Estonia were 24 million Canadian dollars (roughly 20 million U.S. dollars), and Canadian imports from Estonia hit about 86 million Canadian dollars (some 60 million U.S. dollars).
