A one-on-one meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky is possible, the Kremlin said Tuesday.

"Putin himself said that he would never refuse such a meeting, but he believes that a meeting for a meeting's sake will bring little benefit, so it should be well prepared," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

He said Moscow is currently more focused on the preparations for a Normandy-format meeting of the Russian, Ukrainian, German and French leaders on settling the Ukrainian crisis.

Earlier on Tuesday, former President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev proposed organizing a personal meeting between Putin and Zelensky in Kazakhstan, saying that he had discussed the matter with Zelensky, who had agreed.

Peskov told reporters that Putin had a phone conversation with Nazarbayev on Monday, when the proposal was mentioned.

In July, Zelensky posted a video message on Facebook suggesting a meeting with Putin in the Belarusian capital of Minsk to talk about de-escalating the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
