U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Scott Gottlieb, head of the Food and Drug Administration, will leave service next month.

"Scott Gottlieb, who has done an absolutely terrific job as Commissioner of the FDA, plans to leave government service sometime next month," Trump said, confirming previous news reports.

"Scott has helped us to lower drug prices, get a record number of generic drugs approved and onto the market, and so many other things. He and his talents will be greatly missed!" Trump said.

Gottlieb, 46, assumed office on May 11, 2017. He was known for taking a more pro-regulation position than many other members of the Trump administration.
