Six Iranian pilgrims were killed and some 20 wounded in a car bomb explosion in Salahudin province north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Saturday, a provincial police source said.

The attack occurred in the afternoon when a booby-trapped car struck a bus carrying Iranian Shiite pilgrims near the city of Samarra, some 110 km north of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The Iranian pilgrims were on their way back to Baghdad after a visit to the Shiite shrine in Samarra, the source said.

Five days ago, another car bomb went off near a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims on a road near the city of Balad, some 80 km north of Baghdad, killing eight Iranian pilgrims and wounding 19 others.

Insurgents frequently attack pilgrims from the Shiite country of Iran, particularly after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 toppled Saddam Hussein's Sunni regime and set up a Shiite-led government.
