The Special Prosecution in Macedonia announced Thursday that it had filed lawsuits against 94 officials over alleged abuse of institutional capacities by individuals and organized groups, abuse of office and violation of legal proceedings in public procurements.

"We are expecting all the cases to be deliberated through an express procedure by the courts. For the majority of defendants, we demand to be remanded into custody. Among the defendants there are also party leaders, current and former state officials," chief special prosecutor Katica Janeva told reporters.

Special prosecutor said that they had solid evidence about serious abuses committed by these persons.

The wiretapping scandal came up in 2015 when the leader of then opposition and currently Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev accused then prime minister Nikola Gruevski of wiretapping some 20,000 people, including politicians and journalists.

At that time, Zaev said the recordings revealed high-level corruption. The government led by Gruevski denied the accusations and in return filed charges against Zaev, accusing him of spying and attempting to destabilize the Balkan country.

High tensions arose and Gruevski stepped down, forming a caretaker government untill the elections on Dec. 11, 2016.

A special prosecution was later set up to investigate into the accusations.

Now the special prosecutors' mandate is about to end and institutions here are discussing ways how to extend the mandate.
