Finland has decided to dispatch a patrol vessel to participate in the European Union (EU)'s joint operation to tighten its border controls in the Mediterranean, announced Finnish government on Tuesday.

The joint cooperation, coordinated by the EU Borders Agency Frontex, is designed to curb the influx of migrants to Greece, and then from Greece to other member states of the EU.

The operation will be conducted at the sea border between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean Sea.

The Finnish government said the patrol vessel, named Merikarhu, will have a crew of about 20 members, including specially trained personnel for emergency medical care. The vessel is leaving for Greece in early 2016.

Frontex announced on Tuesday that more than 710,000 refugees or immigrants had arrived in the territory of the EU by the end of September this year.

Last Thursday, interior ministers of the EU countries met in Luxembourg and agreed on new measures to tighten the EU's external borders.
