Canadian manufacturing sales rose 1.1 percent to 58.1 billion Canadian dollars (some 44.1 billion U.S. dollars) in June, following a 1.5 percent increase in May, according to Statistics Canada on Thursday.
Statistics Canada attributed the rise in June mainly to sharply higher sales in the petroleum and coal product industry.
Sales of petroleum and coal products surged 15.9 percent in June.
Sales rose in 15 out of 21 industries while declines were seen in chemicals and food products. Excluding vehicles and parts, manufacturing sales rose 0.9 percent.
Sales of chemical products, chiefly pesticides, fertilizers and other agricultural chemicals, fell 4.5 percent in June after two straight monthly increases.
The industry often shows significant growth in May and then declines in June following spring planting in the agricultural sector. However, the decline in June this year was larger than previous years.
