Yale University said Monday there's a gunman on the loose on its New Haven, Connecticut, Old Campus, and the school has advised the entire community to stay indoors.

In an alert posted on its website, the university said "there are confirmed reports of a person with a gun on the Old Campus. The shelter-in-place/lockdown continues."

The school said teams from Yale Police, New Haven and the State Police are on the scene and are actively searching for any gunman.

The New Haven Police said it has received an anonymous call from a phone booth reporting a person on the Yale Campus with a gun. It advises those on campus to remain in their current location until there is additional information.

New Haven Independent, a local on-line news organization, said a caller called the police to report that his roommate wanted to shoot up the school Monday, as cops put Yale's Old Campus on lockdown. The caller said his roommate had a long gun, police spokesman David Hartman said.

Two witnesses told police they saw someone with a rifle or other long gun on the loose, Hartman said. The police have detained witnesses but no suspects, Hartman said early Monday afternoon.

No weapons have been recovered yet.

There have been no reports of shots fired or anyone injured, but Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) officers, FBI agents, and other law-enforcement personnel in fatigues and helmets, with riot shields, massed on campus.

Many students have left campus for the Thanksgiving holiday, as the Ivy League school is now on November break.
